Liturgy

The Liturgical Commission

The Liturgical Commission assists the Archbishop with liturgical matters within the Archdiocese.

Currently there are 12 members of the Liturgical Commission. They have been invited by the Archbishop to serve on the Commission for a term of two or three years.

Our Mission

The Liturgical Commission seeks to foster a rich liturgical life within the Archdiocese where local communities are informed, supported and challenged.

The Liturgical Commission focuses on

  • Liturgical Practice
  • Communications and Publicity
  • Education.

Some of the activities that the Commission is aiming to provide are:

  • a column on liturgical matters in Catholic Voice
  • guidelines for various ministries (see publications section)
  • information on such topics as: Sunday Celebrations of the Word, Order of Christian Funerals, Music in the Liturgy etc
  • local opportunities in parish or region for education in pastoral liturgy e.g. liturgical aspects of ministry. See "Education for Liturgical Ministry".

Synod (2004) Decrees on Liturgy

Each parish will establish a liturgy committee to:

  • promote the "full, conscious and active participation" of the lay faithful in liturgy; and
  • meet regularly.

The people of the archdiocese strongly recommend:

  • initial formation for all those in liturgical ministries;
  • refresher courses every three years for lay ministers.

Parishes are encouraged to form a team:

  • to give or continue pastoral care to the sick and dying, for practical and spiritual support; and
  • for suitably qualified persons to conduct the appropriate celebrations of the Order of Christian Funerals in the absence of a priest or deacon.

To use "sensitive" or "inclusive" language in those areas of Church life where the Archdiocese is the competent authority.
