The Archdiocesan’s World Youth Day pilgrims have reached the business end of planning for their South American trip, as they gathered in Canberra for their first intensive preparation day.
Apart from preparing for a week of WYD celebrations in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro in late July, the group of 15, who will be travelling with the Brisbane contingent, is also gearing for a few days of mission work in Chile before the event.
The 15 participants will be among 130 Australians and 20 New Zealanders who will work with the Columban missionaries in four poor and under-privileged parishes outside Santiago.
The St Columban Mission Society’s Fr Dan Harding, who worked in Chile for two years and will oversee the participants’ mission experience, said the WYD pilgrims will join in parish-based activities, including cultural workshops, cooking classes, gardening and art projects.
They will also do pastoral work, such as home visits and helping the sick, and will take part in social activities, such as barbecues and sports events.
